Ron recently retired from Springfield College, in Springfield, Massachusetts, after teaching for 32 years, 14 of which he served as Chair of the Visual & Performing Arts Department. Ron is an abstract artist who employs formalist elements and compositional principles in his work. He finds the use of abstraction more challenging, allowing for many more opportunities for invention and discovery. His early work was drawn from the sensibilities of impressionism and could be described as abstract impressionistic. And a large body of his most recent work has been inspired by ancient roman wall paintings, Italian Lyric Opera and Italian literature. His current mixed media works are multi-layered and atmospheric, utilizing subtle color values and a formal compositional structure, that invites the viewer’s closer inspection. He has exhibited in numerous juried exhibitions including the 1976 All-Ohio Painting and Sculpture Biennial at the Dayton Art Institute, receiving the Best of Show and Purchase Award, and the White water Valley Annual Drawing, Painting and Printmaking Exhibition, juried by John Canaday, former Art Critic for the New York Times. Additional exhibitions include invitational exhibitions at Indiana University East in Richmond, Indiana and the Schaefer Gallery of Grinnell College, in Grinnell, Iowa. His work may be found in numerous private and corporate collections.
